Sonos Amp Multi Messaging Framework

Role

Copy Lead

Messaging Strategy

Overview

Sonos Amp is the #1 selling stereo amplifier on the market, and one of the company's highest-margin products despite being over seven years old with minimal marketing support. Amp Multi was designed to expand Amp's role within Sonos's B2B business. It’s an 8-channel, 4-zone amplifier built exclusively for professional installers and large-scale residential and commercial installations.

The challenge was translating deeply technical audio engineering into messaging that resonated across two core audiences: the professional installers who spec and buy the product, and the end client who lives with it. I built the core messaging framework from the ground up, developed audience-specific narratives, and created a comprehensive copy library for internal and external partners to leverage across the business.

Key Pillars

Strategy

I worked with Product Marketing to develop thestrategic foundation: position Sonos not as a hardware company but as a solution company, with Amp Multi as a flexible problem solver for installers. Three messaging pillars anchored all downstream copy decisions.

Dealers, distrubutors, and professional installers

Multi-zone, streaming amplifier (4 zones, 8 channels)

Flexible

Establish Sonos and Amp Multi as flexible problem solvers.

Reliable

Position Sonos as a solution company vs. a hardware company.

Unconventional

Introduce Amp Multi as a game changer for installers.

Messaging Strategy

Hero / Awareness

When to use:

  • For top-of-funnel awareness and hero placements (homepage, product page hero, launch ads).

  • Audience: General consumer + professional installers.

  • Purpose: Lead with bold innovation and highlight the breakthrough technologies that make it different.

Installer-first / Professional

When to use:

  • Installer-focused channels (B2B landing pages, experiential, partner emails).

  • Audience: Installers + integrators.

  • Purpose: Spotlight efficiency, scalability, and professional-grade usability.

Credibility / Thought Leadership

When to use:

  • For PR, product launch announcements, and thought-leadership materials.

  • Audience: General consumer + press.

  • Purpose: Establish authority and position Amp Multi as a benchmark product.

Flexible / Creative

When to use:

  • For social, campaign creative, or moments when messaging can be more playful.

  • Audience: Broader professional audience who values dependability and innovation.

  • Purpose: Highlight versatility and challenge conventions in a concise, memorable way.

I organized the messaging into four tiers, each with a tagline and description mapped to specific channels and audiences. The tiers ranged from broad awareness to installer-focused professional messaging, credibility-driven PR language, and flexible creative for social. Each tier included clear guidance on when to use it, who it's for, and what it's meant to accomplish, so any team member or partner could pull the right message when needed.

Product marketing provides a prioritized list of features and benefits, each paired with a short internal description. These descriptions are written for cross-functional alignment, not for consumers. They tend to be technical, vague, or both. My job is to dig into the technical details, figure out what each feature actually means for the person using the product, and rewrite it in language that makes the benefit immediately clear. The left column shows what I receive. The right column shows what the consumer sees.

Final consumer-facing copy

Multi-zone capability
Power up to four independent zones with eight assignable outputs. Each output can be freely configured to suit room layouts, speaker counts, and wiring needs.

Powerful and flexible

With 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms, Amp Multi powers high-performance passive speakers up to four stereo zones. This means four times the coverage compared to Amp, with consistent output even under complex loads.

Innovation from the inside and out

Advanced GaN technology, Class D amplification, and post-filter feedback (PFFB) deliver exceptional audio quality with high efficiency. All this power is housed in a thermally optimized chassis that enhances performance and durability.

Smart outputs
Configure multiple zones with assignable outputs and real-time LED feedback. Amp Multi detects when a speaker is connected and displays clear status indicators to simplify setup and troubleshooting.

Manually tune each output
With ProTune, you can optimize the sound for the placement and room acoustics of any low-impedance passive speakers. This feature offers a comprehensive set of manual controls, including a 10-band parametric EQ and adjustable gain and delay offsets.

Website Framework

The PDP was the primary expression of the framework. The page needed to serve installers evaluating the product for a project while also being comprehensible to a homeowner who lands there from a Google search.

The page follows a deliberate content hierarchy: bold tagline and short description up top, followed by the core value propositions, deeper technical storytelling, practical setup and features, and finally the rack mount system.
